PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

Summary: Economic Development Specialists play a crucial role in promoting economic growth and vitality within a community, region, or state. They are responsible for developing and implementing strategic initiatives to attract businesses, retain existing companies, and foster a vibrant economic environment. Through their expertise in economic analysis, market research, and community engagement, they contribute to the overall job, load, and business growth.

To promote economic growth and sustainability within a community, region, or state by developing and implementing strategic economic development plans, attracting new businesses, retaining existing companies, and fostering relationships with key stakeholders.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Interface with regional economic development agencies and corporate real estate research staffs to obtain and share information on current trends, incentives, and opportunities.(20%)

  • Assess national and regional changes in socio-economic and business trends affecting business and industry attraction and retention. (20%)

  • Conduct detailed real estate site searches and assist in compiling proposals for prospects, competing against other regions to attract or retain businesses to Central Maryland. (15%)

  • Maintain demographic, socio-economic and land databases. (15%)

  • Prepare customized research products for attraction leads and prospects in support of sales efforts Business attraction. (10%)

  • Maintain and refresh data and information on the Department's website. (10%)

  • Attend industry and association meetings and conferences to obtain data and trend information for use in strategic analysis. (10%)

Job Scope

  • This is an individual contributor position that works independently with only general direction, relying on knowledge skills and judgment acquired through education and relevant experience to plan and accomplish assigned tasks and goals.

  • Position requires routine interaction with key internal (e.g., executives, directors, managers, and staff) and external stakeholders (e.g., site location consultants, commercial brokers and economic development research organizations).

  • Must be able to efficiently manage and follow through on multiple requests from all levels of the organization.

  • May require working extended hours and/or shift work to support business operations.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, or other relevant discipline AND 4-7 years relevant business experience (e.g., economic/business development, marketing or customer management), OR in lieu of bachelor's degree, 6-9 years relevant business experience.

  • Experience leveraging information resources to attract commercial and industrial customers to the area.

  • Experience in the analysis of changes in socio-economic and business trends and in developing strategies to respond.

  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills. Computer skills

  • Contacts with site location consultants, commercial brokers and economic development research organizations.

  • May require working extended hours and/or shift work to support business operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, or other relevant discipline

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Experience in economic modeling and data analysis.

  • Knowledge of state and federal economic development programs and incentives.

  • Annual salary will vary based on a candidate's skills, qualifications, experience, and other factors: $88,000-$132,000
